Some new additions to Gallery One

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

whereloveresidesdetail.jpgIt always is a bit of a relief to finish works. One chapter ends, and then the next one begins. One can only hope that the next chapter includes some sort of vacation, or even just a margarita. Or better yet, a margarita on vacation!

So hop over to Gallery One and see some new works. This detail to the left is of “Where Love Resides“, (yes, sort of a reference to How to Make an American Quilt for you chickflick lovers out there). It’s sort of a diorama I just learned today, a painted scene that is slightly 3-dimensional. The subject is the elusive nature of love, and when it rains, it pours.

The other one I added is “Rain Notes“. A sweet, sorrowful piece about song.

…Must …Rest

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Not a whole lot to say, except that it’s hard to maintain various jobs, while being an artist who is trying to make work, and yet also attend your own openings and art events, while still having groceries in the fridge and a walkable living space. I am soooo looking forward to this Memorial Day weekend! Long awaited rest coupled with marathon-like art-making sounds like a dream. Meanwhile, here’s an in-progress work…

Always Start at the Beginning

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

ferdinand2So, one of my longterm goals for this site is to have all my art on here, just in case something happened to them all (they’re in a rickety old garage and various friend’s houses) and also, it’s kind of neat to see a progression. I painted a lot before going to Art School so that will fill a chunk. But to feel thorough, I really wanted to start with my earliest drawings that I knew I had. So I guess I just wanted to start at the beginning. The Older Work gallery is now open.

And another thing, my students always ask me if I always wanted to be an artist. And I reply, that I always liked art. But I wasn’t like an amazing artist or anything. Seeing the world in images or wanting to convey images is a very natural inclination I think. We are such an incredibly visual culture, and art is just another language used to communicate and sometimes release those trapped meanings we don’t know how to convey in words.

Lazy Sunday + Happy Mama Day!

Sunday, May 13th, 2007

bldgprogress.jpgAhhh…..finally a chance to breathe and relax. Yesterday was all about the freeway for me and I feel like I now have a mapquest-like understanding of SoCal. Next time you need directions, I’m your gal.

My mother’s day has been spent working on this work (a snippet of it, left) for an upcoming group show. Stay tuned for more progress!

Three Openings and an Open Studio

Friday, May 11th, 2007

Not to outdo the previous post or anything, but there is some serious business that must take place. This is the month for openings I hoboesandharlotsmust say! These two works are at the Huntington Beach Art Center for their annual auction. The one on the left didn’t make it onto their website, but it is quite amazing in person. See it at the Opening tonight!

Saturday night is the opening reception of the Open Call Group Show at the I-5 Gallery at the Brewery. My good friend Krista Thompson also has some work in the show and has a budding shop on Etsy! There you can see this painting:

Tomorrow earlier in the day I am heading off to the MFA Open Studios at UC Riverside, the school I will be going to in the Fall for my own little MFA!

And finally, Saturday night after I hit the opening at the I-5, I am heading down to Santa Monica’s Copro Nason Gallery, for the opening of “It was all a dream”, featuring the amazingly detailed works of Tiffany Liu, a teacher I work with at Kim Art.
